Michael Frith takes Tolkien’s grand mythic machinery and runs it through a carnival mirror. The cover has the bones of epic fantasy with dark riders, glowing relics, looming evil, strange companions, but every noble shape has been bent into something goofy, bug-eyed, and gloriously unserious. It’s 1969 paperback mischief at full volume: part parody, part countercultural doodle, part “what if Middle-earth got heckled by a room full of smartasses?” Even the composition feels like it’s trying to hold the quest together while the characters actively undermine it.

Fun book. Read it when I was too old to appreciate some of the humor and too young to understand a lot of the other material. Recently saw a reprint at, of all places, Dollar Tree but got mine from a Salvation Army in the 80s. As an aside, the late author Peter A. David and one of his best friends went to a con in Philadelphia dressed as Goodgulf and the Ballhog. Sadly, he didn't include pictures in his articles (that was from a collection of his 'But I Digress'" columns).
Sigh. This sounds interesting.
