This is the cover that kept me from ever reading this series. I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but was so over the kind of fantasy that they put DK Sweet in the cover of that I was never going to give it a chance. And the more I heard about WOT the less I was interested!
Yeah - I agree that it is really hard not to have some kind of reaction not cover art and we all come to it with our own frame of reference. I guess not reading it saved you a lot of time to read a different series. 😆
Stace this is a really great fantasy series and really introduced the modern fantasies of today. It is long, but it really delivers. Agree the cover bombs.
I definitely remember be struck by this cover. I was torn about it being "too" fantasy-y (which I don't think was fair) and also being a LITTLE curious but not very. In the end, I loved the series lol
I’ve read and reread WOT. I agree with the other commentators. This cover did not convey any of the seriousness of this, indeed epic, fantasy series. As an artist, I thought it was unpleasant to look at, made less palatable with the distorted size ratios. It was not the eye catcher that book covers are meant to be. The cover did the author a disservice and was really bizarre for a 1990’s era novel.
Wow! This cover is really striking a chord with people. People either love the cover art or hate it. Most vocal responses seem to really not like it for a variety of reasons.

Maybe so. What’s up with Lan looking like an old man in quasi Chinese armor? Lan was barely in his 20’s. The cover screams “This is not the fantasy you are looking for.”
Why do I get the feeling what you are saying is that the cover art was loosely based upon the blurb for the story?
I wonder why the female character (presuming, not even certain) is smaller than the knight and his horse. She is of a race like Hobbits with smaller horses?
And, there is only one spell cast...I presume either A) to place a town under a curse that the quest is to lift or B) to deceive/shield the town while the heroes leave to solve something undercover.
If the book came out in 1990, it's not exactly a fantasy relic. I'm pretty sure LotR precedes that by about 30 years? Less? And, some of my earliest fantasy finds, like....what was it called Dragonslayer? Some old book that became a movie around 1981, featuring the curly haired guy who went on to be in TV like Aly McBeal and Numbers, I think. There are many older fantasy books...what makes this special?...that it lasted 14 books?
Not really making any commentary on the content to the story just sharing older fantasy paperback cover art... seems like to most vocal folks on this one really kind hate this cover! I try to focus the Legend Lore fantasy paperback cover art posts on 1960s, 70s and 80s - is I'll give it to you that this is really on the outer cusp on that timeframe.
