Eddison’s Worm Ouroboros predates Tolkien but reads like his strange older cousin with sprawling battles, archaic prose, and sorcerers with names like Gorice XX. Ballantine’s 1967 Adult Fantasy reprint brought it roaring back into circulation, complete with Barbara Remington’s psychedelic cover art that looks like it should be airbrushed on the side of a van. This book helped set the tone for the “literary but pulpy” vibe Ballantine cultivated across the whole line, thanks to the legend himself, series editor Lin Carter.
