This isn’t even a fantasy novel! It’s an early book-length study of Tolkien, but somebody at Paperback Library clearly decided the cover still needed to look like Middle-earth after several questionable mushrooms. Originally published in hardcover as The Tolkien Relation, the 1969 paperback was retitled Understanding Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings and dressed for the Tolkien boom with jagged towers, black flying creatures, impossible colors, and flowers that appear to have developed opinions. Contemporary Tolkien fans even complained that the packaging deliberately echoed the hugely popular Ballantine editions. Fifty-plus years later, that shameless psychedelic fantasy energy is exactly what makes the thing glorious.
