Lin Carter was sometimes maligned as a writer without original ideas. I think it's wrong. The Green Star series to give an example in the sword and sorcery field depicts the opposite, while his tales of Lovecraftian horror are equally good. Right I am a long-standing fan, so I'm partial to his work. But he did a lot of work as editor and author and I cherish the paperbacks I have.
But Lin Carter was more an editor and historian. As a teenager I loved the Jandar of Callisto books. Then many years later I discovered they were fan fiction of John Carter by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Lin’s greatest contribution to fantasy land was his support of writers and editing anthologies and writing the fantasy text book ‘Imaginary Worlds’. Can’t compare him to Vance imho.
